Executive Burnout
Recovery Coaching

High achievers rarely break down.
They adapt. They recalibrate.

Burnout to resilience confidential one-to-one coaching for leaders who have been holding everything together for a long time, and are starting to feel the cost of it.

You do not have to step away from your career to recover. You need space to think clearly, an honest look at the patterns underneath, and a way of working that holds under real pressure.

How I work

Hi, I’m Lovena

I work with executives and senior professionals who are highly capable, highly relied upon, and quietly running close to empty.

I burned out myself, in a senior role, while everyone around me assumed I was coping beautifully. I know how long you can keep delivering after the enjoyment has gone, and how convincingly you can tell yourself it is just a busy patch.

So I do not start by asking you to do more. We start by taking things off your plate mentally, so you can think clearly again and from there we look honestly at what made burnout likely in the first place.

A structured approach, not a motivational one

Every piece of work follows the same three movements. They are deliberately in this order — insight is no use while you are too depleted to act on it.

01

Reduce the cognitive load

First we create breathing space. We unpick what you are carrying, separate what is genuinely yours from what you have absorbed, and bring the noise down far enough for you to think.

02

Address the patterns underneath

Burnout is rarely only about workload. We look at the habits that made it likely over-functioning, difficulty delegating, saying yes too quickly, tying your worth to output.

03

Build sustainable ways of working

Then we rebuild. Boundaries that survive a bad week, decisions made from clarity rather than depletion, and a way of leading that does not quietly cost you your health.

“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”

Who this is for

Built for people who are relied upon

This is not general life coaching. It is designed for senior, high-accountability roles where the pressure is constant, visible, and rarely something you can admit to struggling with.

Lovena Patten Coaching

Executives & senior leaders

You carry organisational weight and have very little room to look uncertain in public. The role rewards the exact behaviour that is wearing you down.

Lawyers & partners

Billable pressure, perfectionism as a professional standard, and client demand that never properly stops including on the weekends you had promised yourself.

Founders & business owners

The business depends on you being available. Switching off feels like risk, so you never quite do it, and the recovery keeps getting deferred.

High-accountability roles

Medicine, finance, consulting, the public sector work where errors carry real consequences, so vigilance never fully switches off.

You do not need to be in crisis to start. Most people I work with are still performing well. That is exactly the point it is far easier to recalibrate while you still have something in reserve than to rebuild after a collapse.

Ways we can work together

Pick the path that fits where you are

Three ways in, depending on how much ground you need to cover and how quickly. Every one of them starts with the same free 20 minute call, so you can decide with a real sense of how we would work together.

Common questions

The things people ask first

Is this therapy?

No. Coaching is forward-focused and practical — we work on what you are dealing with now and how you want to operate going forward. Therapy looks at diagnosis and treatment, usually with more attention to the past.

The two work well alongside each other, and plenty of my clients do both. If what you describe on our call needs clinical support, I will tell you plainly rather than take you on.

Do I need to step away from work to recover?

Almost never. The great majority of my clients recover while still in post, which is rather the point — a sabbatical that returns you to exactly the same patterns tends to buy a few months, not a change.

If you are already signed off, coaching can run alongside that and help make the return a genuine reset rather than a repeat.

How long does it take?

Most people notice the load lifting within the first two or three sessions, because that is what we work on first. Changing the patterns underneath takes longer — which is why the main programme runs for twelve weeks.

If you have one pressing decision rather than a broad pattern, the two-hour clarity session is often all you need.

Can we work together if I am outside the UK?

Yes. Sessions run online via Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, and I work with clients across time zones. If you are near Buckinghamshire and would prefer to meet in person, that is available too.

What happens on the free 20-minute call?

A conversation, not a sales pitch. You tell me what is going on, I ask some questions, and we both get a sense of whether this is the right fit. If it is not, I will say so and suggest something better suited.

There is nothing to prepare and no obligation afterwards.

Evidence informed

Burnout is an occupational problem, not a character flaw

The World Health Organization classifies burnout as an occupational phenomenon, a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is not listed as a medical condition, and it is not a personal failing.

That distinction matters, because it changes what actually helps. If the cause sits in how the work is structured and how you respond to it, then that is where the work belongs. The WHO describes three dimensions:

Exhaustion

Depleted energy that rest alone no longer restores. The weekend stops making a difference.

Mental distance

Growing cynicism or detachment from work you once cared about, and from the people in it.

Reduced efficacy

The sense of being less effective, often while still delivering to a standard nobody else questions.

Source: World Health Organization, ICD 11. Burnout is included as an occupational phenomenon (QD85), not as a medical condition. Coaching is not medical treatment or psychological therapy; if clinical support is what you need, I will say so and help you find it.

For HR & people leaders

Supporting a senior employee

If you have a senior leader who is still delivering but visibly running down, you are usually looking at a retention and succession risk long before it becomes a sickness-absence one.

Most employee assistance programmes offer a short run of generic counselling sessions. That has its place, but it is rarely a fit for a director or partner whose situation is specific, highly confidential, and bound up with the demands of the role itself.

I work one-to-one, at senior level, for as long as the work needs — either as a standalone engagement or alongside existing provision. I can work with your people team on scope and invoicing, and I report nothing back about content: the confidentiality is what makes it usable.

What organisations get out of it

  • Retain experienced leaders instead of replacing them at several times the cost of the intervention
  • Fewer long-term absences by acting while someone is still in post
  • Protected succession plans — the people you were counting on stay available
  • Healthier teams underneath, because a depleted leader sets the weather for everyone reporting in
  • Support that senior people will actually use, discreet and outside the internal reporting line

Happy to have an exploratory conversation with HR directly, with or without the individual present at that stage.

A quiet conversation, and no obligation

Most people put this off for months longer than they needed to, usually because they are waiting to feel bad enough to justify it. You do not need to be at that point.

1

Book a free 20-minute call

Online, at a time that works around your diary. Nothing to prepare.

2

We work out what you actually need

You describe what is going on. I ask questions, and tell you honestly whether I am the right person.

3

You decide in your own time

If we go ahead, we agree the path and the fee before anything starts. If not, that is a perfectly good outcome too.
